Bill Balog & B Squared Motorsports: “Elko Dirt Nationals”
7/21/11 – The 2 day “Dirt Nationals” at the Premier Elko Speedway in Elko, MN were up next on the B Squared Motorsports schedule. However, Mother Nature had a different idea, as Friday’s program was washed out.
Saturday the weather was much drier & the racing action went on as planned. The night didn’t start off as Bill & the team had hoped as their power plant under the hood went up in smoke during hot laps. The team quickly got to work installing a fresh motor in between the Maxim frame rails, as the team was doing this they would end up missing qualifying for the night & would have to start last in heat race #1.
The 17B sprinter would start 9th in the 10 lap heat & worked very hard at moving forward. With the track still very narrow, passing came at a premium & by the end of the race Bill had worked his way to a 7th place finish.
With only 25 cars on hand for the event, & 1 scratching after the heats, the IRA officials made the decision to scratch the b-main. With that being done, Bill piloted the Gleason Racing Equipment / Fibrestar Industries 17B from the 24th spot for the 25 lap main event. There was only one direction for Bill to go & he was set to put on a show when the green flag waved. Once the race was under way, he began making moves as the march towards the front was under way. The car seemed to come in better during longer green flag runs, but those just didn’t seem to be on the agenda this night for the rest of the IRA, as the longest run with out a caution was 7 laps. He still had managed to work his way into the top 10 by the end of the event & brought home a solid 8th place finish.
We would like to Thank, Howie Gleason for all his help in getting the motor swapped.
This week the team will be in action at the Wilmot (WI) Raceway on Saturday, July 23rd for the Roger Iiles Tribute.

Bill Balog & B Squared Motorsports: “2 for 2 at 141 Speedway”
7/7/11 – After the first two events of the 2011 season were rained out at the Dodge County Fairgrounds Speedway in April, Bill Balog & the B Squared Motorsports team were eager to finally turn some laps on the “Horsepower Half- Mile” this past Friday along with the rest of the IRA sprinters. 24 cars were on hand for the running of the Rick Schmidt Memorial; Bill turned the 7th fastest time in qualifying with a lap time of 17.226 seconds. He started the heat race from outside row #2, and soon after the green flew, he had moved up to 2nd place. He would spend the rest of the remaining laps chasing down the leader but would come up just short by the time the checkers flew & brought home a solid 2nd place finish.
For the first time in series history, the decision was made to run 2 feature events, with the 1st being for points and pay & the 2nd one being for money only. For the 1st feature, Bill brought the BLZ / Weld Racing 17B to the green flag from the 10th position. He soon began his climb to the front once the green flew, & he had quickly worked his way in to the top 5. He spent the majority of the remaining 20 lap event battling with the 4th place car, until late in the race as he was getting ready to make his move, Bill jumped the berm in turn 2 & packed the right rear wheel full of mud & debris, which resulted in a severe vibration. Just as Bill was getting ready to pull in the infield & call it a night, the red flag flew & Bill was pushed to the work area where the crew quickly assessed the damage. The crew made the necessary repairs & Bill rejoined the field at the tail. Once the green was back out, Bill began working his way back to through the field & by the time the checkered flag waved he managed a 9th place finish.
The top 10 finishers in the 1st feature then redrew for their starting spot in the 2nd feature; Bill was the last driver to pull a number & it just so happened to be the #1 pill. At the drop of the green, Bill moved in to the lead & began to pull away from the field. He soon found himself in lapped traffic & the 2nd place car was right back on his tail. As Bill continued to battle with the lapped cars, the 2nd place car was able to over take Bill. Once Bill cleared the lappers, he began his chase of the race leader. As the 15 lap race was winding down, Bill had closed the gap and was on the tail of the leader. As the top 2 were coming to the checkers, Bill had a run on the leader & made a move to the inside, when the leader decided to drive Bill all the way to in to the infield which made Bill have to lift, resulting in a 2nd place finish.
After an off day on Saturday to enjoy the long weekend, the teams were back in action on Sunday at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, WI for the 2nd of 3 shows this year at the track. 29 IRA sprint car teams / drivers were on hand & when qualifying was all said & done, Bill had turned the 3rd quickest time of the night with a lap time of 11.681 seconds.
By virtue of the 3rd place time in qualifying, Bill started 6th in the third and final heat race. The team made some changes to the car after qualifying as the track quickly dried out & slicked off. Once the green was out in the heat, he methodically worked his way to the front & soon found himself in the 2nd position. A late race caution gave him the break he needed to be right on the leaders bumper, but when the race restarted the wing ram malfunctioned resulting in a ill handling car, & Bill had to hang on the last few laps to bring home a 2nd place finish.
The 30 lap feature was next on the evenings schedule, & a #4 pill was pulled for feature inversion which meant that Bill would pilot the Astro Titanium / DMI 17B from the 7th position. With the track continuing to slick off, the team made a few more adjustments on the car before the feature cars rolled track side. Once the green was out Bill began to slice & dice his way through the field and soon was in the top 3. A caution flag soon waved, which was the break Bill had been hoping for as he was now on the rear bumper of the lead cars. On the restart he easily disposed of the 2nd place car & began to work on the leader. He didn’t have to battle long as he easily moved past him as well. Once in the lead, he began to quickly open up a large lead on the field. Even through a few more yellow flags & a red flag, Bill proved to be the class of the field as he went on to claim his 7th win of the year in the last 9 starts.
The B Squared Motorsports 17B will be in action this coming weekend with the World of Outlaws as they make their annual Wisconsin visits at Cedar Lake Speedway on Friday & then Beaver Dam Raceway on Saturday.

Bill Balog & B Squared Motorsports: “Top 5 & Win #6”
06/30/11 – Another double header weekend was on tap last weekend for Bill Balog & the B Squared Motorsports team. First up was the high banked Kankakee County Speedway in Kankakee, IL. The night began with Bill turning the 9th quickest time in qualifying out of the 31 IRA sprint cars on hand. Next up on the agenda was the 10 lap heat race where Bill would take the green flag from position #4. All he needed to do was bring home a top 5 finish to make the feature race, but like most the other racers out there, he was gunning for the win. After getting a slow start when the green flag dropped, Bill slowly closed the gap on the leader lap by lap & by the time the checkers flew he had worked his way in to the lead & captured another heat race win.
After catching the breaks of the pill draw the past few races, this night was the opposite as Bill started the 30 lap feature from 8th place. Just after Bill crossed under the flag stand to complete lap 1, the 44 car of AJ Bruns, which was running just in front of Bill, spun out in turn 1 & Bill had to take evasive action and spun to avoid. Under yellow, the crew quickly checked the car over & made sure there was nothing bent or broke, luckily nothing was found & Bill was pushed back off to re-join the field at the tail. Once the race went back to green, Bill began to pick off cars lap after lap and was soon in the top 15 when another yellow flew for a spinning car. The field was soon back to racing & Bill was back sawing on the wheel making his way to the front. He was able to run high, low, & through the middle to get passed the slower cars and soon found himself in the top 10. A long green flag run gave Bill the opportunity he needed to move ahead & soon he was battling for a top 5. With just about 5 laps left in the race, another yellow was waved. This was not what Bill had hoped for as he felt he had a shot at the lead cars in lapped traffic. The green flew for the final time & Bill gave it his all to make some more bold moves but in the end he came home with a solid 5th place finish to cap the night.
The 2nd night of the weekend was at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, WI. The last time the team visited here, they ended up in victory lane. Bill started the night by turning the 4th quickest time in qualifying out of the 33 sprinters on hand. He took the green flag in the heat from the 6th position & needed a top 4 to transfer on. The green was soon flying & the race was on for Bill & the rest of the competition. The 1st part of the race it looked as if the set up on the car was off as he was running outside the top 4, but he soon found his stride and made some outstanding moves to work his way in to the lead. He would go on to claim yet another heat race win & lock himself in to the main event.
The #3 pill was drawn for feature inversion, which lined the K&N Engineering 17B up inside row #2. Bill & the crew once again gave the car some final touches in between the heat & feature, and were ready for business when the green flag flew. The green was in the air, and Bill quickly got to work on the 2 cars in front of him. It didn’t take long to work his way in to the lead, once there Bill began to put some distance between him & the rest of the field. He soon found himself in lapped traffic, but the slower cars didn’t seem to deter Bill as he quickly moved his way around them. The race stayed green for quite a while which allowed Bill to put a large amount of cars between himself & the rest of the top 5. Just as the white flag was about to fly, the 2nd place car of Chad Blonde stopped on the track with fuel line issues, which caused the caution flag to fly. When the field went back racing, the top 5 cars were all knocking on Bill’s rear bumper, but like in so many races this year, Bill didn’t stumble on the restart & would easily go on to claim his 6th feature win in the last 7 IRA shows.
This weekend Bill & the rest of the IRA will be in action on Friday at the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Beaver Dam, WI & on Sunday at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, WI.

Bill Balog & B Squared Motorsports: “5 in a Row”
6/22/11 – Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway was up next on the 2011 B Squared Motorsports Tour, a track that seen the team capture 2 of the 3 IRA shows in 2010. To start off the night, Bill drew the #1 pill for qualifying which proved not to be a good draw as the track crew over saturated the track & the early cars were at a disadvantage. By the time the 26 cars had finished qualifying; Bill was bumped back to the 10th position with a lap time of 12.520 seconds.
Bill lined up inside row #2 for the first of 3 IRA 10 lap heat races, all the top runners of the IRA were in his race & he did exactly what he needed to do at the drop of the green & that was to begin passing cars. At the end of the 10 laps Bill had worked his way up to 2nd, which was good enough to be locked into the 30 lap main event.
With another #5 pill drawn for the feature inversion, Bill was set to pilot the Allstar Performance 17B from outside row #2. After the team did some fine tuning between the heat the feature, Bill was set to rock & roll for 30 laps around the lightning quick 1/3 mile oval. At the drop of the green, he quickly settled in to 3rd & began to chase the leaders down. After a handful of laps had been completed, Bill had reeled in the leaders & began to work for the lead. Just as they were entering lapped traffic, he made his move to overtake the leader. Once in the lead he opened up large distance between himself & the rest of the field by working lapped traffic masterfully. As Bill was set to come to the white flag, the red flag was displayed for the 1st time. After a rather quick clean up, the field was set to go back racing for the final 2 laps, & with the top 5 cars all on his tail once again, he took off from the restart & never looked back. He went on to cruise to his 5th win of the year & 5th win in a row!
This week the team will be in action on Friday at the Kankakee County Speedway in Kankakee, IL & then on Saturday at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, WI.

Bill Balog & B Squared Motorsports: “Weekend Sweep”
06/15/11 – It was off to Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, MN for Bill Balog & the B Squared Motorsports team this past Saturday for another round of IRA action. The night started off with Bill turning the 3rd quickest time qualifying out of the 30 cars present with a lap time of 13.178 seconds. By virtue of the 3rd place time, Bill took the green flag in heat #3 from the 6th position. Once the green flag was out, Bill began to work his way to the front & with a late race caution, Bill capitalized on the restart to take the lead & would go on to record another heat race win.
The #5 pill was pulled for the feature inversion which meant Bill would pilot the XYZ Machining Products 17B from the 8th place to start the 30 lap main event. After a brief delay before the feature for the track crew to rework the racing surface, the 22 IRA drivers were ready to do battle. Bill & the crew made some last minute adjustments to the car before they rolled out hoping they could make their way to the front. With the green flag in the air, Bill set his eyes on the lead cars, after having to let the handling of the car come to him, Bill began his march towards the front & by the midway point he worked his way in to the lead. He had opened up a sizable lead & was coming to the white flag when the red flag flew for a 2 car wreck in turn 4. Once the race was restarted Bill had to contend with all the top running cars on his tail, but once again Bill proved to be to strong for the competition as he would go on to claim his 3rd IRA win of the year & 3rd in a row.
On Sunday the team made the 2.5 hour trip over to the Eagle Valley Speedway in Jim Falls, WI for the IRA weekend finale. With a less than stellar run in qualifying, which resulted in a 10th place run out of the 26 cars present, Bill & the team quickly got to work to make the car better for the heat. Bill started inside row #2 for the 1st heat of the night, after battling with the 2nd place car for a few laps, Bill fell in line & was running 3rd when the race leader slowed out of turn 4, brining out a caution. Bill restarted 2nd & had his eyes set on the leader, after trying to make a run on the leader, Bill once again fell in line to run 2nd, when that race leader slowed down the front stretch & pulled in the infield. With no yellow flag, Bill inherited the lead & would cruise from that point forward to bring home yet another heat race win.
Another #5 pill was pulled for feature inversion, which meant the FK Rod Ends 17B would take the green from the 3rd starting spot. Once again, Bill & the crew made some changes after the heat to better them selves for the main event. After putting in a milder version of the set up from the night before at Deer Creek, the team felt they had something going in to the feature. Once the race went green, Bill maintained the 3rd position & began working on the 2 lead cars. As the race wore on, the set up on the car began to work better & better as Bill quickly moved to the lead & began to open up a sizable lead. A caution would fly at lap 13 of the race, but Bill had put quite a few cars down a lap, which would stay in line between him & the 2nd place car. Once the race went back green, Bill would go on to open up another large lead on the field. From that point, he was on cruise control & would go on to claim his 4th win in a row & 19th career IRA feature win.
This coming week the team will be in competition just at the Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway in Oshkosh, WI on Friday June 17th.
The team would also like to welcome, Xtreme Stainless, LLC, based in Sussex, Wisconsin, which specializes in custom metal fabrication to the team.
